How to Fix Teams Room video drops during meeting
Last reviewed
Error message
Video from a Microsoft Teams Room cuts out partway through a meeting; remote participants see a frozen or black tile.
Video drops are almost always a network or peripheral-thermal issue, not a Teams software bug. The Call Quality Dashboard can confirm which.
What this error means
The video stream from the Teams Room device stopped flowing mid-call, even though audio and signaling may still work.
Why this happens
Most often: network bandwidth saturation, packet loss spikes, an SD-WAN/VPN reconvergence, or a thermal-throttled USB camera firmware issue.
Quick fix (for end users)
- Restart the room hardware and rejoin the meeting.
- Try a different meeting from the same room to see if the problem repeats.
Admin / engineer fix
Open Call Quality Dashboard for the affected meeting. Look at video send-side metrics for jitter, packet loss, and round-trip time.
Check whether the room's network path goes through a VPN or SSL-inspecting proxy. Microsoft 365 endpoints should be excluded from inspection.
Confirm UDP 3478–3481 outbound is open to Microsoft 365 endpoints.
Check the camera and compute module for thermal warnings. A hot Logitech Rally Bar will silently downshift video.
Step-by-step fix
Reproduce the drop, noting the timestamp.
Check CQD for that meeting.
Address the dominant problem (network or thermal).

Still broken? Try these
- Compare two rooms side-by-side joining the same meeting from different network paths.
- Open a Microsoft case with CQD data if you can't reproduce on another room.
- Check Microsoft 365 Service Health for any active Teams advisories.

Frequently asked questions
Does upgrading my internet help?
Sometimes. But video drops on adequate links usually point to packet loss or path issues, not raw bandwidth. Check loss before adding more bandwidth.
